Filmed six years before his passing, the documentary captured him in rehearsal, performance, and candid moments that revealed his brilliance, discipline, and quiet magnetism. Following the screening, Mercedes Ellington—director, choreographer, and founder of The Duke Ellington Center for the Arts—shared personal insights into her grandfather’s life and legacy and her ongoing work preserving his vision. The conversation was moderated by David Schroeder, jazz historian, author, educator, and former director of the NYU Jazz Studies Program, who provided historical context on Ellington’s lasting impact.
